This week we introduced their major ALERT architecture project. We took a virtual tour of the downtown Bull Street area where students will be "building" their homes.
We discussed the methods for completing a project, working in phases much like building a building. We began with a "sampling" phase where students found multiple examples of houses that looked interesting to them. They then began the process of sketching each house to decide whether or not it would actually work for them. In the week of November 18-22 students will be making a final decision on the house they will build for their project. Voting for Killian's Haunted House Sketching Contest was delayed due to technical issues. Voting should be up and running by Wednesday the 20th and will conclude the week we come back from Thanksgiving Break. Winners will be announced the 1st week of December.

In ALERT this week students practiced reading, vocabulary, and writing skills by completing a webquest on the Postmodern Architecture style. (see document link below for work sample) They also used straws to apply strategies for completing shape puzzles. Check out the slideshow below for pictures, including completed Haunted House sketches from the last week of October.
This week in ALERT students finished their arch experiments, which helped them get a visual and numeric sense of why the arch has been an integral part of architecture and design for the last 2,000 years. Students also began an exercise in sketching and scaling. They chose a picture, measured its dimensions, and created a grid to scale up their drawing and make it larger. After class they had an opportunity to take their sketch home and add creative features to make the house appear "haunted." Hopefully you have seen your child working on this. |
